Papua New Guinea Pea Starch Processing

The raw material peas contain substances such as starch, protein, fiber, fat, and inorganic salts. The main purpose of starch extraction is to separate these non starch substances from pea starch. The production process of pea starch mainly consists of multiple processes such as pea cleaning, soaking, crushing, desanding, coarse fiber sieving, starch/protein separation, fine fiber sieving, starch concentration and refining, dewatering, drying, and by-product recovery.

(1) Raw material cleaning:
The raw material peas undergo two-stage cleaning sieve to preliminarily remove large and small impurities mixed in the peas, and then undergo cleaning sieve treatment before entering the stone removal tank for hydraulic removal of stones with similar sizes and soil in the peas.

(2) Pea steeping:
Mix quantified peas with a certain proportion of water, heat and soak for a certain period of time to reduce the strength of pea particles and facilitate the crushing and separation of peas.

(3) Rasping and desanding:
Soaked peas are crushed by rasper, and then passed through desander to efficiently separate the sand particles and impurities in pea pulp.

(4) Centrifugal sieving:
After rasping and desanding, the slurry passes through centrifugal sieve to separate and remove crude fibers, obtaining a mixed slurry of starch and protein

(5) Protein separation:
The starch and protein are separated by horizontal screw centrifuge to obtain heavy phase starch slurry and light phase protein slurry. Pea protein products can be obtained through flocculation, dehydration, and drying of light phase protein.

(6) Fine fiber extraction:
The starch slurry obtained after separation by horizontal screw centrifuge is sieved through a fine fiber centrifugal sieve to separate the fine fibers from the starch.

(7) Hydrocyclone refining:
Adopting multi-stage pre de-juicing hydrocyclone unit and multi-stage high-efficiency de-juicing refining hydrocyclone unit, ensuring effective separation of residual proteins and fine fibers in starch slurry.

(8) Vacuum dewatering:
Using vacuum filter for dewatering, ensuring uniform and stable moisture content of the dehydrated material and lower moisture content, saving energy consumption in the drying section.

(9) Starch drying:
Using the high-speed hot air flow in the flash dryer to suspend wet starch, the dehydrated starch is further dried to the required moisture content of the commercial starch during the airflow process.

(10) Sifting and storing:
The dried starch is transferred by a screw conveyor to vibrating sifter for separation and removal of gelatinization and coarse particles in the refined starch, so that the fineness of the finished starch can meet the standard, and then enters the starch silo for temporary storage.

(11) Weighing and packing:
The sifted starch is packed in an automatic packing machine, weighing 25 kilograms per bag.
