Cassava Rice Ushered in New Development Opportunities, Extending Industrial Chain Value of Cassava Deep Processing
Release time:
2026-07-09
In recent years, with the diversified development of global food supplies and continuous upgrading of cassava deep processing technology, cassava rice (reconstituted cassava rice) has gained growing attention as an innovative downstream product of cassava starch, widely applied in food security and feed sectors across Southeast Asia and Africa.
Cassava rice is mainly produced from refined cassava starch. After material mixing, twin-screw extrusion gelatinization, cutting, shaping, drying and cooling, it forms rice-like grains. It can be cooked independently or mixed with natural rice. Thanks to high energy density and cost competitiveness, it is also applicable in feed formulas for livestock and aquaculture.
As a non-grain processed product, cassava rice features distinct strengths. Its raw material relies on abundant cassava resources in Southeast Asia without occupying rice planting land, helping ease rice supply pressure in many regions. Compared with corn and rice, cassava offers cost advantages and helps manufacturers mitigate risks caused by grain price volatility. Formulas can be adjusted to enrich dietary fiber and resistant starch, catering to the growing demand for gluten-free food.
Many countries in Southeast Asia and Africa are advancing industrialized cassava rice projects. In food-insecure regions, it serves as an alternative staple food. For feed producers, cassava rice is adopted as partial substitute for corn to optimize feed recipes. With expanding global cassava starch output and popularization of complete extrusion equipment, investment thresholds for cassava rice production lines keep declining, attracting investment from small and medium processors.
Industry analysts point out that the cassava sector has long focused on starch, dried chips and ethanol, facing severe homogeneous competition. Developing end products such as cassava rice extends the industrial chain and boosts added value of cassava raw materials. Challenges remain, including taste improvement, unified production standards and market cultivation.
In the long run, driven by diversified staple food demand, feed raw material substitution and efficient utilization of non-grain resources, the market prospect of cassava rice is promising. Optimized extrusion technology will make cassava rice a new growth engine for cassava deep processing, promoting higher-value development of the global cassava industry.
